Custom Kitchens & Cottage Cabinetry in Muskoka

Cabinetry and furniture for cottages and lakefront homes on Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, Lake Joseph and Lake of Bays — built for a seasonal building without giving up the finish quality of a year-round house.

Muskoka

Cabinetry That Survives a Muskoka Winter

A cottage is a harder building to put cabinetry into than a house, and most of the reason is humidity. A lakefront property that sits unheated from October to May, then fills with people, steam and open doors all July, puts a cabinet through a moisture cycle a suburban kitchen never sees.

That cycle is what finds the weaknesses. Wood moves with the seasons, so solid panels have to be built with somewhere to go. Joints that were closed in August open in February. Substrate and finish choices that are perfectly sound in a heated home behave differently on a wall three metres from the water. We specify moisture-resistant finishes and construction methods for lakefront and seasonal builds for exactly that reason, and it is the single biggest difference between cottage cabinetry and everything else we make.

We also design for how cottages are actually used: more people than the building was planned for, all arriving at once, usually on a Friday. Oversized islands, serious dry storage, a second dishwasher and dedicated bar or butler’s pantry space matter far more here than in a suburban kitchen.

Every piece is built in our own workshop on Highway 11 in Oro-Medonte, between Barrie and Orillia. Nothing is outsourced and nothing is bought in as a stock unit, which is why we can match an existing moulding profile in an older cottage or build to an out-of-square wall without compromise.

Getting It There

Close Enough to Look After It

Our workshop sits at 2921 Highway 11 in Oro-Medonte, on the road most people take north to the lakes. Gravenhurst is roughly forty-five minutes away. Bracebridge, Port Carling and Bala are around an hour.

That distance does real work on a cottage project. We take our own site measurements rather than working from someone else’s drawings. We deliver and install with our own people instead of handing the job to a third-party installer who has never seen the cabinets before. And if something needs adjusting after a first winter, coming back is a morning, not an expedition.

Most of the cottage owners we work with live somewhere else for most of the year, usually Toronto or the GTA. That is normal and it is not a problem. Drawings, finish samples and approvals happen remotely on your schedule, site visits happen when the property is accessible, and you do not need to be at the lake for us to keep the job moving.

Why Bateman

Why Muskoka Cottage Owners Choose Bateman

Built in Ontario, by us

Design, fabrication and finishing all happen in our Oro-Medonte workshop. One team is accountable for the whole job, start to finish.

Forty years of it

Bateman has been building custom cabinetry since 1983 — more than 1,000 projects across Simcoe County, Muskoka and the GTA.

Built for a seasonal building

Moisture-resistant finishes and construction chosen for a property that is not heated and occupied year round, because that is what fails cottage cabinetry.

Our own delivery and install

We measure, deliver and fit the work ourselves. No third-party installer seeing your cabinets for the first time on the day.

Where We Deliver in Muskoka

We build, deliver and install across the Muskoka lakes and the surrounding townships from our Oro-Medonte workshop, including Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, Port Carling, Bala, Torrance, MacTier, Baysville, Windermere, Milford Bay and Honey Harbour, and the shorelines of Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, Lake Joseph and Lake of Bays.

Water-access and island properties are workable, but they change the delivery plan, the crew and the timeline. Tell us at the first conversation so it is built into the schedule and the quote rather than discovered in week ten.

Recent Work

Projects Near Muskoka

Working with Bateman was an absolute dream. They made the entire process seamless from beginning to end. We were able to meet in person initially, and once we took off, the virtual experience was exceptional. They took care of every detail, and by the time we returned, it felt like a dream come true.
Bigwin Island cottage owners

On Bigwin Island, on Lake of Bays, we built the cabinetry for a full cottage — the kitchen, and a set of bunk beds made to fit the room they stand in. There is no road to Bigwin. The job began in winter, with our crew crossing the ice by snowmobile to measure and plan, and finished the following summer with the completed cabinetry loaded onto a barge and brought over the water. The owners were out of the country for most of it. They came back to a finished cottage.

On a Lake Muskoka property we built a full custom kitchen around a 12-foot rift-cut white oak island, a wine bar with walnut open shelving and climate-controlled storage, and a butler’s pantry with concealed appliance housing — all finished for the seasonal lake environment. Fabrication ran 14 weeks in our Oro-Medonte workshop, with the client working directly with Briar Spencer.

Common Questions

Muskoka — Frequently Asked Questions

Do you deliver and install in Muskoka?

Yes. We build for lakefront and seasonal homes across Muskoka and Georgian Bay from our workshop in Oro-Medonte, and we handle delivery and installation ourselves rather than subcontracting it.

Is cottage cabinetry built differently?

Yes. A seasonal property swings between an unheated winter and a humid, heavily used summer, and that moisture cycle is the main cause of failure in cottage cabinetry. We specify moisture-resistant finishes and construction suited to a building that is not heated and occupied year round.

Our cottage is unheated over the winter. Is that a problem?

It is a design input rather than a problem. It needs to be known before anything is drawn, because it changes material and finish choices and how panels are built to allow for seasonal movement. Tell us at the first conversation whether the building is heated through the winter, partially heated, or shut down completely.

We are only at the cottage in summer. When can you install?

Most cottage owners do not want a crew in the kitchen in July. The usual pattern is to design and quote over the autumn and winter, fabricate through the off-season, and install in spring before the season starts, or in the early autumn once it ends. Working back from a spring install, autumn is the right time to start the conversation.

We live in Toronto. How does that work?

Normally, and it is how most of our cottage work runs. Drawings, finish samples and approvals happen remotely on your schedule. We take our own site measurements at the property, and you do not need to be there for us to keep the job moving.

Can you reach a water-access or island property?

Yes. We have done it. A recent full-cottage project on Bigwin Island, on Lake of Bays, was measured in winter by snowmobile across the ice and installed the following summer with the cabinetry barged over. Water access changes the crew, the sequence and the timeline, so it belongs in the quote from the start rather than as a surprise near installation. Raise it in the first conversation.

Can I meet with you in person?

Yes, by appointment. We are currently operating by appointment only while we rebuild following a fire at our premises, so we cannot accommodate walk-in visits. Call us on 705-315-1010 or email customdesign@batemanfurniture.com and we will arrange a time.

How long does a project take?

Most projects run 8 to 16 weeks from design approval to installation, depending on scope and complexity. Whole-home packages take longer — a recent multi-room new build ran to 20 weeks, coordinated around the construction schedule. We give you a detailed timeline at consultation.

Do you work with designers and builders?

Regularly. We work with roughly 35 trade partners and are comfortable working from your drawings or developing them with you. Builders and interior designers make up a substantial share of our work.
